This is a true story — The other day I was driving with my 10 year old daughter and we pulled up right behind a Volkswagen. She saw the logo on the car and asked, “Mommy, is that a WordPress logo on that car?” I was busting at the seams with pride. I knew then that I was providing my daughter with a chance to learn, grow and thrive in a competitive world. So how did she learn about WordPress at such a young age? It all started with WordCamp for Kids in January of 2011.
WordCamp Phoenix 2013 is proud to carry on the tradition of WordCamp for Kids this January. Come join other parents who are giving their kids a powerful leg up in life by putting the power of internet publishing in their hands. If your child is able to type and use the keyboard, they are old enough to learn WordPress.
Sunday morning from 9:00 am to noon, Natalie MacLees will lead the 3rd Annual WordCamp for Kids.

What age kids will be included in Kid Camp?
Every child is different so it is difficult to give an exact age. If your child can write, use a keyboard (even if they are slow) and use a mouse, then they can probably attend and learn. For the younger ones, we recommend having a parent close by to help. We will also have volunteers at the session to help as well. My daughter started at age 8 and did just fine at that age. She now helps me load content on websites from time to time. 🙂

Will you please let us know what the recommended age range is?
We are going to bring a few kids from the local schools as part of a youth media program we are developing, but we don’t want to bring junior high or high school kids if they are going to feel like the seminar is aimed at a younger audience or is ‘too easy’.
Can you give us an idea of what you will be covering?
WordCamp for kids will be using the WordPress.com platform (not self-hosted) for the class. The class will begin with each student signing up for a WordPress.com account if they don’t already have one. We will cover the creation of pages and posts, adding pictures and videos and the use of the sidebar on the page. We will also show the use of themes as well as widgets and how these can be used to change the look and functionality of the site. This class will not cover any html, php, or css. Since we will be using .com, we will not cover the use of plugins.
Again, ages are very hard to determine. As low as 8 years old have successfully learned and we have had 15 and 16 year olds in the class before. The age is less an issue as their relevant computer experience. A 10 year old who is already hacking away and learning a little bit of html may be bored, while a 16 year old who has not had much experience with the computer will be just fine.
